The Rapid Global Emergence of Cat.1bis
With increasing commercial usage of 5G in more countries, the sunsetting of 2G/3G networks in favor of upgrading to 4G/5G networks is the overwhelming trend of the day, and has become a general consensus of global industries. As the benchmark technology functioning as the host for what’s next in rate applications such as mobile Internet-of-Things, Cat.1bis has gradually become the key driver for the upgrade from 2G/3G mobile IoT businesses to 4G, and is rapidly gaining ground around the world.
In 2019, UNISOC launched the world’s first LTE Cat.1bis Internet-of-Things chip platform 8910DM to cover the medium-speed cellular communication gap between traditional low-power, wide-area NarrowBand-Internet-of-Things and traditional Broadband Internet-of-Things. Cat.1bis has risen to become the technology standard bearer, driving the large-scale development of Cat.1bis medium-speed Internet-of-Things and opening new markets worth hundreds of millions in value. According to Counterpoint’s research report, UNISOC has taken top spot in market share of the global Cat.1 chip market1, and based on the report released by China Electronics Information Industry Development Academy, UNISOC has gained a 70% market share in China’s Cat.1 chip market2, effectively becoming the invisible champion in vertical chip integration.
Expanding Overseas, Breaking Through the Smart Meter Industry
Aside from gaining huge growth in the Chinese market, UNISOC has begun preparing for overseas development for Cat.1bis since 2019. Currently, field testing for 8910DM has been completed in 63 countries, covering 183 operators and will continue to increase more countries and operators, including South America. UNISOC 8910DM has been becoming the world’s first Cat.1bis Internet-of-Things chip certified by Deutsche Telekom. Under Deutsche Telekom’s 11 networks across Europe, UNISOC’s customers can deploy large-scale Internet-of-Things projects with the 8910DM platform, accelerating commercialization in various European markets.
Currently, UNISOC’s Cat.1bis chips have realized large-scale commercial applications in various overseas markets, of which it has attained a market share of more than 80% of India’s Cat.1 smart meter chip industry3. UNISOC joined hands with industry partners to deep-dive into the Indian market, jointly exploring technological enhancements in smart meters with India’s leading meter manufacturers. Success was eventually founded upon LTE Cat.1bis technology, on which large-scale production was achieved, allowing millions of Indian families to benefit from efficient and intelligent digitalized electricity consumption experience. To a large extent, this has served to strengthen the local industries’ approval towards the technological maturity and applicability of UNISOC’s Cat.1bis and promote the large-scale commercial application of UNISOC’s Cat.1bis technology in classic fields such as sharing economy, financial payments, low-carbon travel, public network intercom, new energy and industrial control.
Aside from the Internet-of-Things market in India, Cat.1bis has also demonstrated brilliant growth potential in other overseas markets. UNISOC has been continuously enhancing Cat.1bis technology, targeting emerging needs of the global Internet-of-Things market and furthering the applicability of Cat.1bis. It looks forward to bringing comprehensive enhancements including eDRX/PSM characteristics, enhanced coverage, integrated positioning, higher integration, increased reliability and security, and industrial wide temperature properties, thereby extending better support to the intelligentization of the world’s Internet-of-Things.
